Green hair algae: Oedogonium causes and treatment

“Green hair algae” is a broad name for several freshwater algae that form visible strands. This page mainly covers Oedogonium spp., a genus of fast-growing filamentous green algae. It may be confused by eye with Spirogyra, Rhizoclonium or Cladophora; confirming the genus requires microscopic examination of its cells and reproductive structures.
In an aquarium it commonly forms green, soft or slightly coarse strands attached to leaves, glass, wood, rocks and equipment. As it develops, it may create tufts or mats that shade plants and trap debris.
Its presence alone does not prove “excess nitrate”, and there is no universal NO₃ or PO₄ value that triggers it. Oedogonium can grow at relatively low concentrations and use the available light and nutrients efficiently. Control should focus on removing biomass and restoring stable plant growth rather than trying to drive nutrients to zero.

Weak plant growth or unstable nutrients
Plants compete less effectively when fertilisation, CO₂ or maintenance changes frequently, or when a deficiency stops their growth. This leaves unused light and stable surfaces that algae can colonise.
Do not diagnose the cause from a single reading. Review NO₃ and PO₄ trends, recent changes, the condition of new plant growth and the consistency of fertilisation. Both accumulation and deficiency may be part of the imbalance; driving every nutrient to zero usually weakens plants further.

Restore stable plant growth
- Track nutrient trends and the condition of new plant growth for several weeks.
- Match fertilisation to plant mass and avoid both overdosing and driving macronutrients to zero.
- In CO₂-injected aquariums, keep supply stable and well distributed; in low-tech setups, match lighting to less demanding plants.
- Add fast-growing plants only when they suit the aquarium and can be kept healthy.
- Change one variable at a time so you can identify which correction works.
Grazing animals may eat young strands, but they are not a reliable treatment and should not be added solely to remove algae.
More light than the aquarium can use
Oedogonium photosynthesises efficiently and responds to available light. Strong lighting, a long photoperiod or direct sunlight increases plant demand; if CO₂, nutrients or plant mass cannot keep up, the alga may gain ground.
Growth in a brightly lit area is a clue, not sufficient proof. Assess intensity, duration, plant growth and any recent lighting changes together.

Adjust lighting gradually
- If growth is active, temporarily use a continuous photoperiod of about 6–8 hours.
- Reduce intensity first when the light allows it, especially if the problem began after increasing power.
- Prevent direct sunlight from reaching the aquarium and check that the timer works correctly.
- Keep the new setting for one or two weeks before changing it again.
- Increase light again only when plants are producing healthy new growth consistently.
There is no need to black out the aquarium or split the photoperiod: these measures do not replace the balance between light and plant growth.
Organic waste and irregular maintenance
Uneaten food, decomposing leaves, detritus and a filter that has lost flow release nutrients unpredictably and may become trapped among the strands. They are not a single cause, but they can maintain conditions that allow the alga to persist.
Pay particular attention to low-circulation areas and changes in biological load. A trend over several weeks is more useful than attributing the problem to one isolated value.

Manual removal and stable maintenance
- Wind long strands around a toothbrush or thin rod and pull them out slowly.
- Trim heavily covered leaves and brush removable rocks or wood outside the aquarium.
- Siphon at the same time to collect fragments and debris trapped in the strands.
- Perform regular water changes and match feeding to what livestock actually consumes, without abrupt routine changes.
- Clean prefilters, sponges and hoses when flow decreases while preserving biological media.
Repeat removal every few days at first. Reducing biomass stops the algae from continuing to shade plants while the underlying issue is corrected.
