Description

The banded tiger loach is a large loach of 25 to 30 cm that is sold small and striped and turns into a fish that needs a six-foot tank. It is from the Mekong in Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand, and from the Chao Phraya.

It lives in flowing water, from headwater streams to main channels, and in the wet season migrates into flooded areas to feed and spawn.

Behavior

Aggressive and belligerent: it does not suit much smaller fish, which it intimidates by size and activity, and it can nip long fins. Fast, open-water cyprinids suit it.

It lives well with Devario, Rasbora, large barbs and some Danio.

Avoid housing it with bettas, guppies, many cichlids and any small or slow fish.

Habitat

Syncrossus helodes lives in the Mekong and the Chao Phraya, in flowing water, and migrates in the rainy season into flooded areas.

A very long tank with rocks, wood, sand, current and a tight-fitting lid, because it jumps.

Breeding

It does not appear to have been bred in aquariums. In nature it is presumably a seasonal, migratory spawner.

Diet

An omnivore that forages on the bottom and eats snails.

  • Staple: large sinking pellets or tablets.
  • Supplement: shrimp, mussel, mosquito larvae and some plant matter.

It eats a lot and makes a mess.

General guidance based on water parameters, behaviour and known exceptions; always review the individual animals' and aquarium's specific needs.

Water: FishBase gives pH 6-6.5, up to 5 dH and 24-30 °C; Seriously Fish, pH 6-7.5, 2-12 dGH and 24-30 °C. The profile uses the widest range. Size: 30 cm SL in both sources. It is sometimes confused with S. hymenophysa, from the Greater Sunda Islands and the Malay peninsula.

Litres per fish and minimum tank height and depth: the profile's own judgement. Seriously Fish gives only the tank base and FishBase gives no tank sizes.
