Descripción

The callichthyids are the armoured catfish of South American fresh water, and they include the Corydoras, probably the most widespread bottom fish in the hobby. Their bodies are covered in bony plates instead of scales, and a modified intestine lets them breathe atmospheric air: that is why they dash to the surface for a gulp now and then, normal behaviour that often alarms newcomers. They are gregarious and peaceful, and need soft substrate so their barbels are not damaged.
