Description
The melanotaeniids are the rainbowfish of Australia and New Guinea, active, elongated shoaling fish with two dorsal fins. Many live in lakes and rivers of hard, alkaline water, which makes them good candidates for anyone with hard tap water. Their colours take months to appear: shop juveniles are grey and dull. Several species have very small ranges and are threatened in the wild, and nearly all hybridise if mixed.
