Descripción

The vampire crab has a carapace of about 2 cm and a striking contrast between its dark purple body and vivid yellow eyes. It is important to understand before buying that it is not an aquatic animal: it needs a paludarium with a large land area and only a shallow film of water. Placing it in a conventional water-filled aquarium will kill it. It is sociable, kept in groups, and unlike almost every other aquarium crab it does not need brackish water to breed.

Hábitat

It lives on the damp forest floor of Java, among leaf litter and roots, near streams but out of the water. A proper setup reproduces that: deep moisture-retaining substrate, bark and moss to climb and hide in, high ambient humidity and a small water area only a few centimetres deep.
