Descripción
Blyxa japonica is an aquatic plant in the Hydrocharitaceae family, native to tropical and subtropical Asia. Although it resembles a grass-like rosette, botanically it develops a very short stem densely covered with narrow leaves. In the aquarium it forms light, flowing clumps that add volume without creating a rigid mass.
It generally reaches 10–20 cm in height, making it especially useful in the midground; in larger aquariums it can also be placed toward the foreground. Under moderate light it remains green, while stronger lighting, stable CO₂, and balanced nutrition can produce more compact growth and golden, bronze, or reddish tones.
This is a medium-difficulty plant. It benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate or root fertilisation, a regular supply of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and trace elements, and stable CO₂. Avoid changing lighting, fertilisation, and CO₂ at the same time: sudden shifts can damage the leaves and encourage algae.
Some leaf loss may occur after planting while the plant adapts. Remove only damaged tissue, keep the aquarium stable, and avoid repeatedly uprooting it. Once a healthy root system develops, growth becomes firmer and new shoots appear from the base.
