Bacopa caroliniana

Bacopa caroliniana, commonly known as lemon bacopa or blue waterhyssop, is a hardy aquatic stem plant native to the southeastern United States and Cuba. Its upright stems carry fleshy, oval, opposite leaves with a rich green colour; damaged or trimmed leaves release a distinctive lemon-like scent.

It is a relatively slow-growing, easy-to-maintain species suitable for beginners. It works well in the midground or background and is most decorative when planted in small groups with some space between individual stems.

Under low light it generally remains green, while stronger lighting and balanced nutrition can produce copper, bronze or orange tones in the upper shoots. Injected CO₂ is not essential, although it encourages more vigorous growth. The plant can also grow emersed after reaching the water surface.
