Ceratophyllaceae are aquatic plants without true roots: they float freely or anchor precariously, taking all their nutrients directly from the water through stem and leaves. That quirk makes them extremely useful in newly set up tanks and in breeding tanks, where they form a dense tangle that shelters fry and consumes excess nitrate.
