Description
The Osphronemidae family groups the so-called labyrinth fish, which include gouramis and bettas. Their most distinctive feature is the labyrinth organ: an auxiliary respiratory structure that allows them to breathe oxygen directly from atmospheric air. This organ allowed them to colonize stagnant, swampy water or water with low dissolved oxygen content.
Native to South and Southeast Asia, they inhabit rice paddies, slow rivers, lagoons, and channels with dense vegetation.
