Acanthaceae: Hygrophila and fast-growing stem plants

The aquarium Acanthaceae, above all the genus Hygrophila, are fast-growing, highly tolerant stem plants. They are the classic choice for starting a planted tank: they take up nutrients greedily and outcompete algae in exactly those first weeks when the balance is most fragile. They need frequent pruning and every cutting gives a new plant.
