Description
Neritina juttingae is a compact nerite of 1.5 to 2 cm, among the smallest on offer for cleaning algae. That size makes it useful in small tanks and with shrimp, where a large nerite becomes cumbersome.
It scrapes fine algae from glass and leaves without touching healthy vegetation, and is very peaceful with any tank mate that does not eat snails. Its only serious demand is mineral: in soft water the shell pits, so hardness matters most.
It has no reproduction in fresh water: the larvae live in the sea or estuary, so it never overruns a tank. It may leave white capsules on the decoration, which can be removed by hand if they bother.
Habitat
It lives in streams and short rivers that reach the sea: adults live in fresh water and the larvae go out to the coast. It has been recorded in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, China, Singapore and French Polynesia.
In the aquarium it appreciates water with some hardness and algae-covered surfaces. It tends to climb out of the water, so it needs a lid.
