Description
Neritina turrita is a nerite of about 2 to 3 cm with a shell of somewhat raised spire — hence the name, 'tower-shaped' — and dark lines running across the surface. It is a good eater of hard algae on glass and rocks.
It gets on well with small fish, shrimp and other snails. Its care resembles that of its relatives: alkaline water with some hardness so the shell does not dissolve, no copper treatments and places to hide.
It does not complete its cycle in fresh water: the eggs it lays do not hatch, and the young only develop in brackish water.
Habitat
It lives in coastal rivers and their lower reaches, on stone and wood: adults in fresh water and larvae in the sea. It has been recorded in the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Fiji, Palau, Papua New Guinea and Samoa.
In the aquarium a porous rock with algae, mineralised water and some current are advisable.
