Description
Neritina pulligera is a nerite with a glossy black shell, larger than the zebra nerite — up to 3 cm — and one of the best algae grazers there is. It scrapes the hard algae off glass, stones and anubias leaves that almost nothing else touches.
It has the advantage of all nerites: it does not breed in fresh water. It lays little white eggs on stones and wood, but the larvae need brackish water, so it never multiplies in the aquarium.
Its demand is the opposite of most snails': it needs algae. In a very clean tank it goes hungry and needs supplementing with plant-based tablets.
Habitat
It lives in coastal rivers of the Indo-Pacific, from the Philippines to New Guinea, on stones in flowing stretches. The larvae drift down to the sea or estuaries and the juveniles migrate back upriver.
In the aquarium it needs algae-covered surfaces to graze, some flow, hard enough water for its shell, and a lid: it sometimes climbs out.
