Description
Neritina semiconica takes its name from its semi-conical shell: wide at the base and higher than that of round nerites, at about 2 cm. It is a discreet, effective nerite that cleans glass, stones and wood of green film.
It is sociable and calm, and lives with small fish, shrimp and snails without bothering them. Like its relatives, it cannot stand soft or acidic water, which corrodes its shell, or copper-based medication.
It does not multiply in fresh water: its larvae need brackish or marine water.
Habitat
It lives in short-course rivers and estuary areas of the western Indo-Pacific, attached to stones and roots. It has been recorded in Indonesia, the Philippines, India and Mauritius.
In the aquarium it is kept in alkaline water, with algae-covered rocks and good oxygenation. It crawls along the glass until it climbs out, so the tank must stay closed.
