Description
Neritina waigiensis is a medium-sized nerite of about 2 to 3 cm, with a smooth shell of highly variable pattern on a dark ground: no two are alike, which makes it eye-catching. It eats algal films on glass, rocks and leaves, and leaves healthy plants alone.
It is peaceful with fish, shrimp and other snails. The delicate point is the water: the shell, made of calcium carbonate, erodes in soft or acidic water, so it prefers alkaline water with some hardness.
It does not breed in fresh water: egg capsules stay sterile, because the larvae need brackish water. It climbs out of the water easily, so the tank is best kept covered.
Habitat
It lives in coastal rivers and river mouths of the Indo-Pacific, on stones and wood. It has been recorded from the Philippines and Indonesia to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, and also in Sri Lanka and Japan. The larvae develop in brackish water and the juveniles move back upriver.
In the aquarium wood and stone with algae and some water movement are advisable.
