Description

The red ramshorn is a snail with a flat, coiled shell about 2 cm across and an intensely red body because it lacks dark pigment: its blood carries haemoglobin and shows through. There are pink, blue and spotted forms, all of the same species.

It is a good cleaner of soft algae, leftovers and dead leaves, and does not eat healthy plants. What to know is that it breeds a lot: it lays jelly-like clutches on glass and leaves, and if there is surplus food the population takes off. As with any snail, its numbers tell you how much you are feeding.

Scientific name
Planorbella duryi
Difficulty
Easy

Habitat

It is native to Florida, from ponds, canals and lakes of slow, temperate water with plenty of vegetation. It tolerates a wide temperature range and needs no heater indoors.

It needs some hardness in the water for its shell: in very soft water the shell erodes.
