Description
The glass shrimp is a small, transparent Macrobrachium of about 3-4 cm, from the genus of large, predatory river prawns. This species is the calm exception of the group, which is why it turns up in shops.
It has an advantage few shrimp of its size offer: it breeds in fresh water, with a short larval stage that needs no brackish water. With dense planting a colony sustains itself.
It is worth remembering which genus it comes from: when hungry it eats other shrimp's young and fry, so it is not a good companion in a Neocaridina breeding tank.
Habitat
It lives in rice paddies, canals, ponds and slow rivers of Thailand, Malaysia and the Indochinese peninsula, among dense vegetation in warm water.
In the aquarium it wants fine plants, hiding places and stable water. It copes well in a community tank of small fish that do not see it as food.
